Mexico's ruling party closes ranks around candidate

MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexico's ruling party overhauled its candidate's struggling presidential campaign on Monday, unveiling a new team and promising a more aggressive strategy to woo undecided voters after a string of public missteps.

Josefina Vazquez Mota, aspiring to become Mexico's first woman president in the July 1 election, said her conservative National Action Party, or PAN, had been bogged down by infighting following a drawn-out primary.

Vazquez Mota is battling to close a wide gap with front-runner Enrique Pena Nieto from the opposition Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, which ruled Mexico for most of the 20th century.

The former congresswoman and Cabinet member - acknowledging fumbles in the first official days of the race - held a packed news conference flanked by the PAN party chairman and more than two dozen strategists and organizers, including many close to President Felipe Calderon.

The president, who is prohibited from seeking a second term, was widely believed to have supported former Finance Minister Ernesto Cordero for the party's nomination in a February primary election won by Vazquez Mota.

Cordero joined Vazquez Mota on Monday as a new strategist for the campaign, and Calderon's sister, Luisa Maria Calderon, was put in charge of the get-out-the-vote effort in the president's home state of Michoacan.

"I have decided to change course, I am demanding that we leave the party's internal conflicts behind and once and for all work together toward victory," Vazquez Mota said.

Armed with a campaign slogan: "Josefina is Different," Vazquez Mota is seeking to delicately separate herself from the government's less popular policies while drawing support from Calderon's inner circle.

She pledged to retool the government's security strategy with a more humane focus on victims of drug war violence, which has killed more than 50,000 people in the past five years.

Victims' groups have criticized Calderon for not addressing their needs, and Vazquez Mota on Monday named a special campaign coordinator to deal with family members of people killed or kidnapped by organized crime.

A campaign aide said the candidate would focus more on social media and grass-roots events to get closer to citizens.

"I recognize that it is time to redouble efforts," Vazquez Mota said, adding the aim would be to convince undecided voters who make up almost 20 percent of the electorate. "We have lost time and been distracted by secondary issues."

A poll published on Monday by the Parametria firm showed Vazquez Mota trailing Pena Nieto by 18 points, with the leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador - who narrowly lost the presidency to Calderon in 2006 - in third place just 7 points behind the PAN.

Pena Nieto is likely to win the election by a wide margin, Carlos Ramirez from the Eurasia Group risk analysis firm wrote in a research note.

"For voters to start considering changing their current preference for the PRI, a major polarizing event would be needed to change the current lethargic mood of the electorate, something that is looking less and less likely by the day," Ramirez wrote.

Logistical failures have dogged Vazquez Mota on the campaign trail. A small protest of laid-off airline workers forced her to cancel one event last week. At a large rally last month, supporters, upset by the candidate's late arrival, streamed out before she even got up to speak.

Vazquez Mota also fired one of her communications staff after a flurry of Twitter users mocked a campaign schedule that misspelled the name of the central state of Tlaxcala, near the state of Puebla where Vazquez Mota was born.

"Josefina writes Tlazcala and she was the Minister of Education, just imagine it!" said one commentator on the micro-blogging site.

PAN Chairman Gustavo Madero has said the media are unfairly training a microscope on every detail of the campaign, amplifying minor issues instead of the candidate's proposals for Mexico.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Miami Marlins manger Ozzie Guillen will apologize again for telling a magazine he loves Fidel Castro.

Guillen will return to Florida following Monday's game at Philadelphia and apologize Tuesday at Marlins Park. The Phillies and Marlins are off Tuesday before the series resumes Wednesday.

Guillen had told Time magazine he loves the Cuban leader and respects him for staying in power so long. The manager said before Monday's game he's had sleepless nights because of his comments and wants to make amends.

"I'm going to make everything clear what's going on," he said. "People can see me and talk. I've already talked to people. But I think it's the proper thing to see my eyes. They can see me and ask whatever question they want. I think sooner is better. Better for the ballclub, better for me."

He apologized over the weekend after the story broke last week.

A Cuban-American group planned a demonstration Tuesday at the ballpark. The protest was organized before Guillen said he would fly to Miami.

"I know I hurt a lot of people," Guillen said. "I want to get the thing over with."

Guillen said the news conference would be open to "anybody that wants to be there."

Whole genome breast cancer study launched by Mayo Clinic USA

The Breast Cancer Genome Guided Therapy Study (BEAUTY Project) will help physicians tailor chemotherapy to breast cancer patients based on their individual genomes and the genomes of their tumors.

Mayo Clinic researchers will obtain three whole genome sequences: one from the patients' healthy cells before treatment, and two tumor genomes ? one before chemotherapy and one after. Patients will be paired with mouse "avatars" that will help physicians identify the best treatment for each person.

"What is so exciting about this study is that it has the potential to really bring individualized medicine to our patients," says Matthew Goetz, M.D., Mayo oncologist and study co-leader. "It will transform how we conduct breast cancer research and how drug therapies are delivered to women with breast cancer."

In phase one of the BEAUTY Project, researchers will study the first 200 participants to look for common mutations that allow some tumors to adapt and thrive during chemotherapy. This information will help doctors identify new drugs and treatment strategies.

Women diagnosed with "high-risk" cancers who are scheduled to receive standard chemotherapy before surgery will have their healthy genome and their breast cancer tumor cells sequenced before treatment, and then receive the commonly prescribed chemotherapy to shrink the tumor. At surgery, the residual cancer tumor cells will be sequenced again to evaluate how they have mutated and adapted to chemotherapy.

In addition, patients' tumor tissue will be kept alive by implanting cell lines in immune-compromised mice -- before and after chemotherapy. The use of these mouse "avatars'' will let researchers study the effects of chemotherapy on individual patient tumors and identify the best treatment, without risk of harm to the patient.

"Patients are pleased after definitive breast surgery to be cancer free," says Judy Boughey, M.D., a Mayo breast surgeon and study co-leader. "Unfortunately, a subset of high-risk patients still may experience recurrence, even months or years later. We designed this study to give those patients hope that our ability to decode the genome of every patient might give us new tools to treat cancer."

Oncologists, surgeons, radiologists, and genomics and cancer researchers will work together to uncover the clues to effective individualized therapies and drug discovery. The BEAUTY Project is being funded by benefactors and the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine, in collaboration with the Mayo Clinic Cancer Center.

"We are living in an era that I never thought I'd see during my career -- when we can sequence, in real time, the entire genome of a patient and her tumor and use that information to tailor treatment to the individual patient," says Richard Weinshilboum, M.D., director of the Pharmacogenomics Program in the Mayo Clinic Center for Individualized Medicine.

Together, the whole-genome sequencing data and transplanted cell lines are used to identify the gene pathways that influence individual patients' responses to chemotherapy. Armed with this deeper understanding of the genomics of cancer, doctors will be able to optimize treatment plans for individual patients.

This approach, called pharmacogenomics, is part of an ongoing effort at Mayo Clinic to personalize medicine for every patient and will help doctors prescribe the right drug for the right patient at the right dose and time. Additional work is being done in the Center for Individualized Medicine to develop clinical decision support tools to help doctors prescribe the best medication for each patient based on the latest pharmacogenomic knowledge.

Though initially being applied to breast cancer, this approach will be used in the future to study the treatment of many other types of cancer.

Detecting breast cancer's fingerprint in a droplet of blood

(Nanowerk News) One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during her lifetime. The earlier cancer is detected, the better the chance of successful treatment and long-term survival. However, early cancer diagnosis is still challenging as testing by mammography remains cumbersome, costly, and in many cases, cancer can only be detected at an advanced stage. A team based in the Dept. of Biomedical Engineering at McGill University's Faculty of Medicine has developed a new microfluidics-based microarray that could one day radically change how and when cancer is diagnosed. Their findings are published in the April issue of the journal Molecular & Cellular Proteomics ("Antibody Colocalization Microarray: A Scalable Technology for Multiplex Protein Analysis in Complex Samples").

For years, scientists have worked to develop blood tests for cancer based on the presence of the Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA), a protein biomarker for cancer identified over 40 years ago by McGill's Dr. Phil Gold. This biomarker, however, is also found in healthy people and its concentration varies from person to person depending on genetic background and lifestyle. As such, it has not been possible to establish a precise cut-off between healthy individuals and those with cancer.

"Attempts have been made to overcome this problem of person-to-person variability by seeking to establish a molecular 'portrait' of a person by measuring both the concentration of multiple proteins in the blood and identifying the signature molecules that, taken together, constitute a characteristic 'fingerprint' of cancer," explains Dr. David Juncker, the team's principal investigator. "However, no reliable set of biomarkers has been found, and no such test is available today. Our goal is to find a way around this."

Dr. Mateu Pla-Roca, the study's first author, along with members of Juncker's team, began by analyzing the most commonly used existing technologies that measure multiple proteins in the blood and developing a model describing their vulnerabilities and limitations. Specifically, they discovered why the number of protein targets that can be measured simultaneously has been limited and why the accuracy and reproducibility of these tests have been so challenging to improve. Armed with a better understanding of these limitations, the team then developed a novel microfluidics-based microarray technology that circumvents these restrictions. Using this new approach, it then became possible to measure as many protein biomarkers as desired while minimizing the possibility of obtaining false results.

Juncker's biomedical engineering group, together with oncology and bioinformatics teams from McGill's Goodman Cancer Research Centre, then measured the profile of 32 proteins in the blood of 11 healthy controls and 17 individuals who had a particular subtype of breast cancer (estrogen receptor-positive). The researchers found that a subset of six of these 32 proteins could be used to establish a fingerprint for this cancer and classify each of the patients and healthy controls as having or not having breast cancer.

"While this study needs to be repeated with additional markers and a greater diversity of patients and cancer subsets before such a test can be applied to clinical diagnosis, these results nonetheless underscore the exciting potential of this new technology," said Juncker.

Looking ahead, Juncker and his collaborators have set as their goal the development of a simple test that can be carried out in a physician's office using a droplet of blood, thereby reducing dependence on mammography and minimizing attendant exposure to X-rays, discomfort and cost. His lab is currently developing a hand-held version of the test and is working on improving its sensitivity so as to be able to accurately detect breast cancer and ultimately, many other diseases, at the earliest possible stage.

Greece Is Seeing A Huge Reaction To ... - Business Insider

Following yesterday's tragic suicide in the middle of Athens, Syntagma Square saw both protests and violence.

The BBC reports hundreds of protesters gathered in the square just hours after the suicide of Dimitris Christoulas, with petrol bombs thrown at police and tear gas fired in return.

Athens News reports that the demonstrators had organized themselves with social media, appearing under a banner that read "Let's not get used to death".

At the site of Christoulas' suicide sit many tributes, with flowers and one note reading "enough is enough".

The head of the Attica Pharmacists' Association Kostas Lourantos (of which Christoulas was formerly a member) released a statement that read:

"The way he chose is a statement of a political position and stance. If this man had killed himself at home there would not have been such a stir, as there had not been for the previous 1900 suicides. It is an incident that we must look at among many other incidents of suicide in our country, the country of sun and laughter."

Reports last year suggest that the Greek suicide rate rose at least 17% during the financial crisis.

In the Ira Glass video I shared yesterday, the public radio personality advised that the best way to improve your creative work ? in our case professional speaking ? is by doing a lot of it.

?And the most important possible thing you could do, is do a lot of work,? says Glass. ?Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you?re going to finish one story. Because it?s only by actually going through a volume of work that you?re actually going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you?re making will be as good as your ambitions.?

I agree completely. The only way your ideas will improve is by harnessing your creativity and working on them on a regular basis. The only way your speechwriting will improve is by getting down to work and writing on a regular basis. And the only way your presentation skills will improve is by practising your delivery on a regular basis. To advance yourself in the world of professional speaking it?s important to develop a creative routine and to implement it regularly.

I recently came across a post on Maria Popova?s wonderful website Brain Pickings that outlined American writer Henry Miller?s ?11 Commandments of Writing and Daily Creative Routine.??Miller came up with these rules or commandments while he was working on his first novel, Tropic of Cancer, and they were later published in Henry Miller on Writing.

They seem to have served him well, and it?s my belief they can be applied to the world of professional speaking just as well as to the world of writing.

Commandments

1. Work on one thing at a time until finished.

2. Start no more new books, add no more new material to ?Black Spring.?

3. Don?t be nervous. Work calmly, joyously, recklessly on whatever is in hand.

4. Work according to Program and not according to mood. Stop at the appointed time!

5. When you can?t create you can work.

6. Cement a little every day, rather than add new fertilizers.

7. Keep human! See people, go places, drink if you feel like it.

8. Don?t be a draught-horse! Work with pleasure only.

9. Discard the Program when you feel like it ??but go back to it next day. Concentrate. Narrow down. Exclude.

10. Forget the books you want to write. Think only of the book you are writing.

11. Write first and always. Painting, music, friends, cinema, all these come afterwards.

Report: North Korea's Kim was chronic truant

The current ruler of nuclear-armed North Korea was a laggard student who frequently skipped class when he was attending a school in Switzerland in the 1990s, according to the Daily Record news site. ?

The UK publication, citing leaked documents, reported that the Kim Jong Un, 29, who took the helm of the isolated totalitarian country upon the death of his father, Kim Jong Il, in December, missed 75 days of school his first year of school at the International School in Berne.

Kim missed 105 days his second year at the elite private school, where he registered under a pseudonym?as the son of a North Korean diplomat.?It was not clear from the report which grade levels he was in at the time, but?he would have been in his?mid-teens. ?

An unnamed source who said he was a school friend of Kim said that Pak Un ? as Kim was known there ? often did not show up at school until afternoon, preferring instead to play video games or watch basketball on television.

His grades seemed to suffer accordingly. According to the report, he failed science and got minimum pass grades in English and German, the main language used in the Swiss capital of Bern, but did well in music and technical studies.

Kim Jong Un was enrolled in the Kim Il Sung Military University in Pyongyang from 2002 to 2007, most analysts agree.

Kim Jong Un, now dubbed the "great successor," is the third-generation North Korean leader in his family, though virtually nothing was known about him before he was appointed to a set of powerful positions in 2011. His father, Kim Jong Il, came to power in a similar fashion, moving into the top military, government and party roles left by his father, Kim Il Sung, a communist guerrilla fighter who is considered the father of the country.

North Korea analysts continue to puzzle over the newest Kim in charge. It remains unclear how much support he has within the military, and whether he has any inclination toward reform ? seen as essential to restarting the country?s moribund economy and breaking the country?s isolation.

The United States, South Korea and other allies were discouraged by Pyongyang?s recent insistence that it soon will launch a rocket ? purportedly to put a satellite in orbit ? but widely viewed as a pretext for a long-range missile test.

Is There Common Sense in Personal Finance? | The Debt Princess

I don?t like the phrase ?common sense? when it is paired with anything related to personal finance. In my opinion, there is nothing common about finances when you are uneducated.

By watching what I was being exposed to growing up, it was common to be in debt. If you needed a new car, then common sense said to get a car loan. If you were short one month and needed groceries, common sense said to use a credit card to purchase them.

Those actions were common, every day occurrences and that made them common sense.

The topic for this blog post came from a post on the Payoff.com Blog. ?8 Common Sense Do?s and Don?ts of Personal Finance? really resonated with me. Of those 8, presumed ?common sense? steps, I have failed at all eight of them! No surprise there when you come from a family that never discussed money and lived with a parent who used her credit cards a lot.

I think the article could have been reworded and approached differently and the impact would have been better. To know that I?ve failed those 8 steps in my past makes me feel like I am ignorant.

Some things are NOT common sense.

When you do not have a financial education there is no common sense to personal finance. I certainly think there are people who have the mindset capable of thinking about it but I don?t think that?s the average person and that, in my opinion, is what makes something ?common sense.?

If you are a parent, it is your responsibility to teach your children about making more money than they spend. If you don?t, you?ll have an adult who lives how they wants to live and then makes ?ends meet? by acquiring debt in the form of a credit card.

If you do not show your children how to track their spending and budget their finances, you will see your child become an adult who is in debt and struggling with their life.

Personal finance is not common sense.

It is a confusing topic for many people and one that needs to be explained before common sense becomes credit cards, overspending and under-budgeting.

April is Financial Literacy Month. My goal with this blog has always been to show people the face of debt in the hopes that they will learn about personal finance themselves and then teach those they love about it too. My new career goal is to take this blog and turn it into opportunities to speak about personal finance and the importance of financial literacy. There is no better time than today to learn something new and pass that information on.

Some people like to play games head to head, while others want everyone to be involved. For this reason, it is important that you pay attention to the number of people that a game is designed for. For instance, a game of Yahtzee, although an old game, is suitable for any number of people, but Scrabble is really only designed for two to four people.

Where Should You Buy New Board Games?

There is a list published online every year of the top ten new board games, and some of these often make it into the most popular games of all time every now and then. Although you may find a good old game of Monopoly or Chutes and Ladders comforting to play, the truth is that there are some really fun new board games out there that you can try. You will get to learn some new skills, and you might be challenged with what you learn. By going online, you will see that there are a lot of options out there for you and your family's fun.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand?-- The owners of a stricken container ship wrecked on a reef off a popular New Zealand holiday spot have been charged with causing the country's worst environmental disaster in decades, maritime officials said on Thursday.

Daina Shipping, a unit of Greece's Costamare Inc., has been charged with discharging harmful substances after its 47,230-ton Liberian-flagged ship Rena struck a reef about?12 miles off Tauranga, New Zealand's biggest export port, in early October.

The charge carries a maximum fine of?$488,000. The owners face an additional daily fine of $8,130.

The ship's captain and second officer have already pleaded guilty to operating the ship in a dangerous manner, releasing toxic substances and to altering the ship's documents.

The two Filipino men face sentences of up to seven years in jail. They will be sentenced in late May.

Marine officials said high winds and seas have battered the wreck, causing more containers to fall into the sea and spreading oil still leaking from the ship.

The ship spilt around 3301 tons of thick, toxic fuel oil when it hit the reef, killing thousands of sea birds and polluting beaches up to 60 miles from the reef.

ScienceOnline2012 interview with Rebecca Guenard

Every year I ask some of the attendees of the ScienceOnline conferences to tell me (and my readers) more about themselves, their careers, current projects and their views on the use of the Web in science, science education or science communication. So now we continue with the participants of ScienceOnline2012. See all the interviews in this series here.

Today my guest is Rebecca Guenard (blog, Twitter).

Welcome to A Blog Around The Clock. Would you, please, tell my readers a little bit more about yourself? Where are you coming from (both geographically and philosophically)? What is your background? Any scientific education?

Hi, I?m Rebecca Guenard. I currently live outside of Philadelphia, PA with my husband and our two boys.

I have loved math and science for as long as I can remember. I have a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Chemistry.

I spent a year working for the chemical industry where I learned I was better suited for academia.

Tell us a little more about your career trajectory so far: interesting projects past and present?

I began my career in academia as an adjunct while we started our family. Then I took a permanent teaching position at Temple University. I worked at Temple for five years, teaching the large freshman lectures, as well as upper division courses for majors. At the same time I conducted research, sort of a nontraditional postdoc. My aim was to seek a tenure track position, but the needs of my family were such that I left Temple to work independently from home. Now I am part-time cruise director and part-time science writer.

The transition from academia was tough, I had been in hallowed halls since I was 17 years old. I had grown attached to the structure of the academic system. So I took a few years to concentrate on kids and figure out life outside that hierarchy. I kept my hand in chemistry while I privately tutored, but I opened myself up to new experiences. I volunteered for an organization that needed help improving communications. The experience taught me a lot and gave me the confidence to combine chemistry and communications, as I had originally intended when I left Temple.

Science writing is another form of teaching. A 50 minute lecture for a freshman class is a kind of performance; there is an entertainment factor associated with it. This is especially true for chemistry because students tend to be intimidated by the subject. A good chemistry professor pulls students in, settles their fears and while their attention is gripped shoves in as much curriculum as they can.

I have the same philosophy when I communicate science with the written word.

What is taking up the most of your time and passion these days? What are your goals?

Currently, most of my time is taken up with telling stories. I developed a blog called atomic-o-licious last summer which I am using to feel my way through science communications.

I am interested in accessibility. If you want to read science content you have hundreds of options. If you seek it out you will find it. But there are so many people who never seek out science. Maybe they are busy or intimidated, for whatever the reason science isn?t a priority. There is an extensive audience that needs to be offered different bait. It is that audience I seek with atomic-o-licious.

I would love for my blog to be like a Dave Barry column which attracts readers because it is entertaining, it makes them laugh. But there is a bonus, science is folded in among the humor.

Every day I can pull a story from my life and relate it to chemistry; I see the world through chemistry-colored glasses. And most days life just cracks me up. What a dream to have an outlet for combining the two!

Chemistry is a tough subject; readers are naturally drawn to life sciences, chemistry tends to drive people away. But I am going to draw them, gosh darnnit.

One of my goals is to expand my readership. It is creeping up slowly. I am grateful for the receptiveness of the science writing community, and I look forward to reaching a broader audience.

I am also continually pitching stories to mainstream publications to get my name in print and out to a non-science audience which might be enticed back to my blog (plus I wouldn?t mind getting paid).

What aspect of science communication and/or particular use of the Web in science interests you the most?

The Web is full of amazing science resources. Since I am most interested in creating a narrative, in telling a good story, I am focused on blogs right now. I also like blogs for aggregating information. Social media makes it so easy to share new, interesting research that is written about on blogs.

I also like the idea of having a YouTube channel, a place to create chem videos, but I need time to formulate the goals of such a channel.

How does (if it does) blogging figure in your work? How about social networks, e.g., Twitter, Google Plus and Facebook? Do you find all this online activity to be a net positive (or even a necessity) in what you do?

Aside from being a form of science communication, I view my blog as a portfolio. If you take the whole body of work hopefully you can see that I am growing and learning in the craft of science writing.

I would have zero readership without social networks. They are vital to expanding science communication. I like that social networks connect me to other science communicators.

I had a narrow view of science prior to social networks. There was the research I was doing and the research papers that I read that were close to what I was doing; who had time for anything else. With social networks I am connected to people with different backgrounds and interests and through our network they bring what they are studying to me. It is a process that still amazes me. I am exposed to so much more than I ever was before social networks.

When and how did you first discover science blogs? What are some of your favourites? Have you discovered any cool science blogs by the participants at the Conference?

The Loom is probably the first science blog I discovered, but I can?t remember how I came across it. Prior to that I mostly read science in print and on news sites. But until recently, when I came out from under my chem prof bell jar, I was oblivious to how much was available.

I ricochet throughout the web daily. I mostly visit blogs within science blog networks or stories that are brought to my attention on Twitter.

What was the best aspect of ScienceOnline2012 for you? Any suggestions for next year? Is there anything that happened at this Conference ? a session, something someone said or did or wrote ? that will change the way you think about science communication, or something that you will take with you to your job, blog-reading and blog-writing?

Every aspect of the conference changed the way I think about science communication. I was trained to hold on tight to information. Some of the research projects I was on were industry collaborations so the research results were proprietary, but also science is a competitive environment in which to be raised. Knowledge is power, you don?t relinquish it, that is the message that gets whispered in your ear.

There is a lesson to be learned from the difficulty the scientific community has had relaying the importance of climate change. We can?t just keep the general public out of scientific research and expect that they will suddenly snap into compliance when we discover something troublesome. Climate scientists have had to spend precious years explaining how they know what they know about climate change instead of taking steps to stop it.

This issue coupled with social media has developed a new breed of scientists who understand the need for the open communication of research. I am having to play catch-up and unlearn my training. This conference was an invaluable aid in taking those steps. All of the openness was weird at first, the twitter followers, the conference wikispace, the open access conference schedule. I felt exposed. But I met people I wouldn?t even have made eye contact with at another conference.

I had many interactions with people at scio12 that have influenced my work. I spoke with journalism veterans who gave me concrete advice on finding narratives, maintaining blogs and refining stories. I also talked to people who have been blogging longer than me and graciously extended their advice, encouragement, and support. It was a wonderful experience. I look forward to scio13!
