Va. veteran detained after strident Facebook posts

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) ? A former Marine involuntarily detained for psychiatric evaluation for posting strident anti-government messages on Facebook has received an outpouring of support from people who say authorities are trampling on his First Amendment rights.

Brandon J. Raub, 26, has been in custody since FBI, Secret Service agents and police in Virginia's Chesterfield County questioned him Thursday evening about what they said were ominous posts talking about a coming revolution. In one message earlier this month according to authorities, Raub wrote: "Sharpen my axe; I'm here to sever heads."

Police ? acting under a state law that allows emergency, temporary psychiatric commitments upon the recommendation of a mental health professional ? took Raub to the John Randolph Medical Center in Hopewell. He was not charged with any crime.

A Virginia-based civil liberties group, The Rutherford Institute, dispatched one of its attorneys to the hospital to represent Raub at a hearing Monday. A judge ordered Raub detained for another month, Rutherford executive director John Whitehead said.

"For government officials to not only arrest Brandon Raub for doing nothing more than exercising his First Amendment rights but to actually force him to undergo psychological evaluations and detain him against his will goes against every constitutional principle this country was founded upon," Whitehead said.

Raub's mother, Cathleen Thomas, said by telephone that the government had overstepped its bounds.

"The bottom line is his freedom of speech has been violated," she said.

Thomas said her son, who served tours as a combat engineer in Iraq and Afghanistan, is "concerned about all the wars we've experienced" and believes the U.S. government was complicit in the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. One of his Facebook posts, she said, pictured the gaping hole in the Pentagon and asked "where's the plane?"

Whitehead said he found nothing alarming in Raub's social media commentaries. "The posts I read that supposedly were of concern were libertarian-type posts I see all the time," he said.

The big concern, Whitehead said, is whether government officials are monitoring citizens' private Facebook pages and detaining people with whom they disagree.

Dee Rybiski, an FBI spokeswoman in Richmond, said there was no Facebook snooping by her agency.

"We received quite a few complaints about what were perceived as threatening posts," she said. "Given the circumstances with the things that have gone on in the country with some of these mass shootings, it would be horrible for law enforcement not to pay attention to complaints."

Whitehead said some of the posts in question were made on a closed Facebook page that Raub had recently created so he questioned whether anyone from the public would have complained about them.

"Support Brandon Raub" Facebook pages have drawn significant interest, and other Internet sites had numerous comments from people outraged by the veteran's detention.

Raub's supporters characterized the detention as an arrest, complaining he was handcuffed and whisked away in a police cruiser without being served a warrant or read his rights. But authorities say it wasn't an arrest because Raub doesn't face criminal charges.

Col. Thierry Dupuis, the county police chief, said Raub was taken into custody upon the recommendation of mental health crisis intervention workers. He said the action was taken under the state's emergency custody statute, which allows a magistrate to order the civil detention and psychiatric evaluation of a person who is considered potentially dangerous.

He said Raub was handcuffed because he resisted officers' attempts to take him into custody.

Relationships and Marriage: Married 31 yr's...now seperated

Teaching Bible study, active in missions, encouraging others, attending church, writing christian articles online....

AM I IMMUNE TO ATTACK??? No

?

In the past 3 years we have lost two homes, jobs and now I sit and type this alone.

Yesterday my husband took a suitcase and left, he called our youngest son to pick him up.

At almost 60, I work at a difficult job.? He is alone in the apartment we rent.? We barely pay

our bills and need to conserve gas.?? After losing his job 2 yr's ago we lost our home, we

then moved to a small home we had just got a mortgage on as a retirement home.? You see,

we were going to sell you home and with the funds pay for the small retirement home and be

able to live on social security while getting involved with short term missions.

So the plan was to go, until the bottom fell out.

We were taught our home was our best investment.

So we followed our parents example but that did not work, did it?

So here I am, two short sales, working twice as hard as I did 30 yr's ago, physically trying

to makea it through each day, and now seperated.

Each day we discussed "how" and "what" to manage through the next month.

?

Yes, I am overwhelmed.? He is stressed.? He does spend time in the Word.? We know how

important it is to draw close to Him in this time.?

I search daily for rent to own homes, since at our age if something were to happen to either

of us I could not pay the rent.

Our grown children have turned us down to sign for a loan of $25,000 for us. We can pay for a

mortgage quite easily on social security for that amount. Yes, there are homes here selling for

that amount.

?

So I am overwhelmed with disappointment, seperation and disbelief and how all this is happening.

I know nothing happens in our life that does not pass by His eyes first,? what now?

?

I am physically and emotionally tired.? So is my husband.??

I always wanted to go off and serve with missions, and maybe God is pushing us this way?

I do not mind selling all my possessions and going!

My husband refuses.

I am ready to have a garage sale and go on my own.

?

Help...

Sister In Christ who is try to dodge the darts of the devil daily and getting tired.

I read in the forums of people pulling bait and switch tactics in relationships, specifically marriages, with regards to financial arrangements, child rearing, porn usage and sex.

why is this such a common tactic, and why do people tolerate and hope and wait for things to change when they obviously (from an outside perspective) wont change?

Have you ever been baited and switched, and what are you ding/going to do/done about it?

How do you recognize when this is being done to you?

Is there any real difference between bait and switch (further on referred to as BAS) and 'changing you mind?'

Yes there is a difference between ?bait and switch? and ?changing your mind?.

When a person does a ?bait and switch? they are intentionally promising something they have no intention of living up to. They feel that the ends justify the means. Generally they think that either you will forget about the promise, or that they can just not do it later and you will have to accept the switch. IT?s a pretty nasty thing for a person to do.

If they have to promise something to get what they want it?s ok. When a person changes their mind, they original promise was sincere. It was the afterwards when the circumstances are not what they expected that they change their mind based on the new reality.

I feel that the guy I married in 2000 pulled bait and switch on me. He promised to love me and be faithful. Yet he was cheating the whole time we dated and the first 2 years of our marriage. He also promised that he would work full time at his very well paid job and pull his weight financially in the marriage. He lost his job in 2002 and never got another.. just sat home and let me support him and his two children.

What did I do? Well after I caught the infidelity, I stupidly agreed to reconcile. And when he did not find work I stupidly just kept supporting him and his children.

I was not very smart about all of this. Should have kicked him to the curb as soon as I found out about the lying and infidelity. The first bait/switch should have ended it all.

Labeling stuff makes it easier for people to justify their reactions. It allows them not look further into things, not to ask questions, and to just decide all about another person's motivations, emotions, and decisions. It creates a "one size fits all" answer to everything.

Ultimately, no one else can truly know the reason why another person does something. Though you can guess you can't know whether someone is actually "baiting and switching" or - simply did indeed change their mind. All you can do is glean clues from their behavior.

There's another thread going about how a wife stopped doing certain sex acts, and now the OP and others are clamoring she's a "bait and switcher" and how she should be kicked to the curb, she was "just trying to trap you" she "was setting up a lie."

Which is one interpretation.

But the other could be - when your relationship is less steady, you might feel less comfortable in refusing a SO's advances. Who knows, the OP's wife might even regret what she did, but - that doesn't matter. Apparently, if you do something once, or a few times you are setting up the expectation and promise it will happen all the time, you cannot decide otherwise later, or it's a "bait and switch."

I think that sets up a really bad precedent.

It isn't just sex that's used as a bait and switch. Affection is also used, I've known plenty of guys who were incredibly affectionate beforehand and as soon as the marriage/long term relationship is set, the affection dies.

If the wife communicated her regret, it would demonstrate a mind change.

If she closed him down when he tried to communicate his unhappiness, didnt try to compromise and didnt care how it left him feeling and is happy to keep their partner in the dark about how they feel, it demonstrates a BaS.

In retail, it is fraud & unlawful - used to complete a sale or seal the deal - false advertising.

A person who presents a persona (advertising) that is false (insert anything) in order to seal the deal (marriage).

Happens all of the time - very sad.

I guess here if I use the phrase, it

2012 conventions embrace social media openness

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Democrats and Republicans are using social media to turn their national conventions away from the smoke-filled rooms of yore and into meetings where anyone who wants to get involved is just a click away, no matter where they are.

Both parties' ambitious plans reflect the maturation of social media sites that played a much smaller role in the conventions four years ago. The Republicans call theirs a "convention without walls," while the Democrats say their gathering will be "the most open and accessible in history."

Democrats will not just show prime-time speeches live on the Internet, but will also stream caucus meetings and the council discussions of the party's platform and ideals over the Web. Republicans have hired a full-time blogger and a full-time digital communications manager to do nothing but engage people online.

The conventions' Facebook and Twitter sites are already stoking interest in the events, with photos of the Republican stage under construction in Tampa or profiles of Democratic volunteers and delegates. Users can interact with a mouse click, such as one who urged friends to help the GOP convention Twitter feed muster more followers than its counterpart. Both had more than 10,000 followers Friday.

Social media was still in its infancy four years ago. The number of items posted on Twitter on Election Day 2008 is equal to about six minutes worth of tweets today, the social media company recently wrote on its blog.

The dramatic changes in social media have required both parties to almost start from scratch in developing strategies for incorporating Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram and Flickr into their conventions.

In 2008, Republicans hired a web vendor to handle all things Internet for their convention. Now, there's a dedicated social media team with its own "Social Media War Room" in the Tampa Convention Center. The party's biggest push through the Internet will come through videos on YouTube, Republican National Convention spokesman James Davis said.

"Our goal is to leverage these technologies, to reach every American, whether they are in Toledo, Ohio, the convention floor in Tampa or a forward operating base in Afghanistan," he said.

Democrats will have a similar setup at their convention Sept. 4-6 in Charlotte. (Republicans meet a week earlier in Tampa.)

"We're able to expand it even further and invite the whole country to participate in a more interactive way then you might traditionally experience by tuning into a television," said Nikki Sutton, director of digital media for the 2012 Democratic Convention.

And those planning protests are using the Internet to get organized, too. The March on Wall Street South, which plans to bring thousands to Charlotte to rally against big business and economic inequality, has a website, Facebook page and Twitter account.

Organizers hope to use the Web to direct people to sites in more than a dozen states where they can take buses to Charlotte to join in the various protests during the week.

Social media is allowing modern-day campaigns and political parties to get their messages out unfiltered. That's especially useful as broadcasters and newspapers have drastically reduced the amount of air time and space they devote to conventions.

Convention organizers will use social media to emphasize themes that might get lost in the traditional media's limited coverage, said David Kreiss, an assistant professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill journalism school who authored a book about the use of new media from former presidential candidate Howard Dean to President Barack Obama.

"There's just not a lot of convention coverage that is going to be offered by the major networks, and this becomes a way that individual figures' speeches get publicity," Kreiss said.

Social media is increasingly allowing parties to control their message ? and spreading those key messages through an online network of "friends" may allow them to create a sense of credibility, Kreiss said. It will be "viewed as more credible and more authentic" than less-personal media coverage.

The candidates' overall campaigns are also ratcheting up efforts to reach voters online. A report released Wednesday by the Pew Research Center found that President Barack Obama's campaign was more active than Republican Mitt Romney's on the digital front.

The group's Project for Excellent in Journalism analyzed both campaigns' efforts between June 4-17 and found Obama's team posted almost four times as much content during the period and maintained an active presence on almost twice as many platforms. But Romney's campaign said his Facebook page has more people who share or comment on his posts.

Of course, the only metric that matters will be votes in November, and both campaigns and their parties think social media will be critical to get their voters excited enough to go to the polls.

Democrats have already released a smartphone app that provides one place for videos, blog posts and photos. The app also includes an interactive map to help visitors to Charlotte find convention locations or restaurants.

Their convention Facebook site has been running posts spotlighting different delegates and volunteers from across the country for months. Its Flickr page included more than 150 photos from people who printed out a special "I'm There" logo and had their pictures made with it, promising to either be in Charlotte or to follow the convention online. One person holding up his sign on the site is Vice President Joe Biden.

On the GOP convention's Facebook page, a posting showed a picture of lighting rigs inside the Tampa Bay Times Forum and said: "The lights are on and we only have 17 more days to go! Are you ready to nominate the next President of the United States?? The entry had more than 360 "likes" and 400 comments on Wednesday afternoon.

The Democrats used Twitter to invite more than a dozen followers on a tour in July. They got to see Time-Warner Arena, where most of the convention is taking place the first week in September, and the city's football stadium, where Obama will give his acceptance speech.

For Rashon Carraway, the tour was a dream come true. He sells men's clothes online, but the political science major in college hasn't forgotten his first love.

"This was a great opportunity for me to get an up close and personal look at something I am passionate about, and I have always wanted to do," said Carraway.

He plans to attend as many convention events as he can ? using his cellphone to make online posts.

And it's just not the parties and protesters who have an interactive strategy.

Donna Chen, the director of marketing and communications for the Tampa Downtown Partnership said more than 15 tourism and convention groups are setting up their own "Social Media Command Center" for the convention.

Tampa Bay and Co., the area's tourism and marketing agency, is coordinating the effort. They'll use the hashtag "TampaBay" to curate the posts.

Chen said about 50 local experts will monitor and interact with people online. They will staff the center and answer questions about the area from people in town for the convention ? for instance, "where's a good Italian restaurant?" or "What's the closest beach to downtown Tampa?"

Samsung Galaxy S III bootloader for Verizon can now be unlocked: take that, Big Red (update: video)

Samsung Galaxy S III bootloader for Verizon can now be unlocked: take that, Big Red

If you're hot and bothered by the Galaxy S III on Verizon and have a burning desire to get your grubby little mitts on some custom ROMs and kernels, then rejoice, because you'll no longer have to plunk down $600 on the Developer Edition to partake in the fun. That's right, the encrypted bootloader of Big Red's Galaxy S III has now been unlocked. If you're wanting to partake in the fun, you'll find the requisite utility and a complete list of instructions over at xda-developers. As is, you'll need either Linux or OS X to carry out the dirty work, though workarounds for Windows users are possible. Be sure to do a bit of soul-searching before pulling the trigger, however, as any future updates pose the risk of bricking your device. That said, if you dive straight into the world of custom ROMs, it'll be much less of an issue.

For some, CEO salary is higher than tax bill

By Nanette Byrnes , Reuters

Citigroup, Abbott Laboratories, and AT&T are among the 26 companies that paid more to their CEOs in 2011 than they did in federal taxes, according to a study released on Thursday.

Tax breaks on research and development, past losses, and foreign-held earnings were among those lightening the tax load for many companies on the list, said the Institute for Policy Studies, a left-leaning think tank in Washington, D.C.

Citi, Abbott and AT&T all took issue with the institute's methodology. All three said they paid all taxes owed in 2011.

During a presidential election cycle in which wealth and taxes are often debated, the study's authors said the U.S. tax code has become an enabler of large CEO pay, while also offering companies ways to reduce their tax bills.

Four pay-related tax breaks combined to cost taxpayers $14 billion in uncollected federal taxes, the report said.

The four included breaks dealing with performance-based chief executive pay and stock options, as well as the preferential 15 percent tax rate on carried interest enjoyed by private equity partners and other financiers, it said.

Compensation for the 26 CEOs whose pay surpassed their companies' corporate tax bills averaged $20.4 million, according to the study. That average was up 23 percent over last year.

The average was also significantly higher than pay tracked by separate studies of broader groups. For instance, $10.3 million was the average 2011 direct compensation for 300 large-company CEOs tracked by pay consultants Hay Group.

Current U.S. taxes paid eyed
To get its list, the institute compared CEO pay to current U.S. taxes paid, excluding foreign and state and local taxes that may also have been paid, as well as deferred taxes that can often be far larger than current taxes paid.

The group's rationale was that U.S. taxes paid are the closest approximation available in public documents to what companies may have actually written in their checks for last year to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service.

Among companies topping the institute's list:

  • Citigroup, the financial services giant, with a tax refund of $144 million based on prior losses, paid CEO Vikram Pandit $14.9 million in 2011, despite an advisory vote against it by 55 percent of shareholders.
  • Telecoms group AT&T paid CEO Randall Stephenson $18.7 million, but was entitled to a $420 million tax refund thanks to billions in tax savings from recent rules accelerating depreciation of assets.
  • Drugmaker Abbott Laboratories paid CEO Miles White $19 million, while garnering a $586 million refund. Abbott has 64 subsidiaries in 16 countries considered by authorities to be tax havens, the institute said.

Abott takes issue
"This is a blatant misrepresentation of the facts," Abbott spokesman Scott Stoffel said.

He said Abbott did not get a rebate, but paid the U.S. government $700 million in federal income taxes in 2011, and that the report's numbers reflect a non-cash accounting adjustment caused by the resolution of various tax matters.

A Citigroup spokeswoman said that, while the company did not pay federal income tax in 2011, that was due to substantial losses it recorded in 2008 and 2009, a break available to all businesses in similar straits.

She also noted that Citi paid on average $3.7 billion a year in federal income taxes from 2000 to 2006, and paid other taxes last year, including more than $3 billion in payroll taxes, and that Pandit voluntarily took a salary of just $1 in 2010.

AT&T said in a statement its CEO's pay was closely tied to performance and was fair, and that the accelerated deductions that lowered its federal taxes stemmed in part from $20 billion spent in support of the U.S. economy and jobs. The company reported paying $3.8 billion in other taxes last year, and hundreds of millions in federal income taxes in 2010.

All the tax breaks identified in the study are legal and shareholders generally expect companies to take advantage of any reasonable tax breaks they can, said David Wise, a senior principal with Hay Group.

If the tax code changed to eliminate pay-related deductions, like the stock option deduction, he said, "individual companies could navigate that fairly easily. But collectively, those dollars would add up and increase the tax base."

How to Get a Deal on a Game Console

alduinmontagno Posted by alduinmontagno on 12 hours ago

Gaming consoles such as the Xbox and the PlayStation are extremely popular. Unlike a gaming PC which needs to be updated frequently with the latest graphics card and the fastest processor, a gaming console is guaranteed to give you gaming nirvana for years to come. Getting a gaming console can be expensive if you are going for the latest version like the PlayStation 3. The outdated PlayStation 2 might be dirt cheap in comparison to it but you should remember that the latest version of the gaming console has more games available for play. The upcoming blockbuster games would be made for the latest version and there would be no support for the earlier and outdated versions.

You should also factor in the fact that games are going to cost you as well. Comparing console prices across websites and retail stores would get you the best available deal. You should also lookout for any bundled games or accessories that come as part of the package. There is also an option of buying the console second hand from various websites. The reputation of the website and the substantially reduced prices along with how old the console is and how much it has been used should be the main points for consideration.

You can keep a look out on sites like eBay and online classifieds sites where you can find people looking to sell their consoles. At times you will notice that there is a fire sale where the console needs to be sold in a very short span of time. An example of a fire sale is that someone has been transferred to another country or promoted to another country and hence needs to sell his console before going abroad. Such cases present a golden opportunity to get hold of a console. Often websites have a row where the owner states why he is selling the product. Paying close attention to the reason is important for the reason stated above. Beware of people selling their consoles just because it is a dead box.

Preferably go for consoles which are available near you or at the most in the state that you live. It is better to check whether the console is working in person so as to avoid a dead box situation. If the seller does not allow checking of the console in person in spite of you staying close by then it is best to let go of such deals. The price may seem ridiculously low on such deals but this may be to suck you in to purchase the dead console. Hence it is best to resist the low price and move on with your console search. Just as you can buy used and cheap game consoles you can also buy used games.

You also have the option of renting games from a games library. If you are a gamer that does not play a game twice then this option is perfect for you. You can also get some cash by selling games you own and using the cash earned to play some newer games by renting them.

Gaming consoles these days are quite pricey, especially when they first come out. Most new systems cost between $300 and $600. To learn more about getting great deals on systems and to find out more about great video games visit our website at http://fycgaming.net
